When your best friend asks you to take photos, you say yes every single time. Getting to photograph people you love is one of the biggest reminders of why I became a photographer in the first place.
I’ve known Kierra for almost 10 years now, and my husband, Corbyn, has known her for about 7 years. Even though they live around four hours away, every chance we get to spend time together is special. Being able to reconnect while capturing updated portraits for Kierra and Dakota made this session even more meaningful.
I originally photographed their engagement session and bridals nearly two years ago, so getting them back in front of my camera again was such a full-circle moment. Since then, I’ve upgraded all of my photography gear and refined my editing style, so I had been hoping to photograph them again for a while.
This couples portrait session at Nature Park ended up being more of a mini session, but we still captured so much variety in a short amount of time. Mini sessions can sometimes feel rushed or stressful, but having a solid plan makes all the difference. We focused on one beautiful area of the park that featured a small bridge, soft shade, and gorgeous natural light — basically everything a photographer could hope for during a portrait session.
One thing I loved about this location was how calm and natural it felt. Even though the park was still a little bare for the season, we were still able to find beautiful light and create timeless images together. I would love to come back later in the year when everything is greener and more full of life.
For anyone planning a short portrait session, my biggest tip is to keep things simple. Choosing one strong location and preparing a handful of poses ahead of time helps sessions flow naturally and allows couples to relax in front of the camera. Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments when clients are simply laughing together and enjoying the experience.
Sessions like this remind me why I love couples photography so much. It’s never just about taking photos — it’s about documenting connection, personality, and memories that deserve to be preserved.
